From 1 April, millions of households will see their council tax bills rise. Most local authorities in England are planning increases of 5%, adding around £109 to a typical Band D bill. In Scotland, rates are set to rise by at least 8%, while in Wales, increases will range from 4.5% to 9.5%. Northern Ireland operates a different system known as ‘rates’.
Most councils in England can raise council tax by a maximum of 5% this year, made up of:
- Local council funding – capped at 3%, supporting local services.
- Adult social care charge – up to 2%, covering care services.
- Mayoral charges – in London (4.03%), Manchester (14.2%) and Liverpool (26.3%).
Council tax was frozen in 2024/25, but all 32 councils are increasing rates in 2025/26, with most households seeing rises of at least 8%.
Bills will rise between 4.5% and 9.5% depending on your local council. Additional charges may apply for police, fire services, and town/parish councils, varying by area.
How much you will pay depends on your council tax band and location. Check with your local authority for full details of your new bill.
